Biography
Among raps elder statesmen with origins in 1981, Brooklyns Stetsasonic were hugely influential on a number of fronts. They were one of the few bands of their generation to promote the use of live instruments, and there was simply no hip-hop comparison to their onstage power. Via their A.F.R.I.C.A. 45 (1985) they helped usher in a new wave of black consciousness and ethnocentricity/positivity, which both De La Soul and the Jungle Brothers would further streamline. Proceeds from the song were handed over to the Africa Fund for humanitarian relief projects. Alongside Run-DMC, Stetsasonic were instrumental in promoting the rock/rap crossover, yet maintained an articulate rap narrative, best sampled on their classic second album, In Full Gear.
