Biography

10 November 1981, Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Singer-songwriter Fretwell enjoyed a surge of media interest at the end of 2004 following the release of his debut Magpie and a number of support slots for the bestselling band Keane.

Fretwell moved to Manchester to study at Salford University but decided to launch a full-time music career instead of completing his degree. Having begun writing songs at an early age he quickly found his niche as a singer-songwriter, establishing himself on the Manchester live circuit and performing a support slot for semi-famous local band Elbow. His debut recording 8 Songs was released on 10-inch vinyl in 2002 in a limited edition run of 1, 000 copies. Recorded on budget equipment by Fretwell and his friend Jay Sikora, the material on the mini-album transcended its lo-fi origins through the strength of Fretwell’s songwriting and performance.
