Stefon DeLeon Harris, 23 March 1973, Albany, New York, USA. Harris started out playing piano, studying the classical form for many years at both the Eastman and the Manhattan Schools of Music. Along the way to graduation, he took an interest in jazz and also switched to the vibraphone. While still a student, he gained working experience with Max Roach, Bobby Watson, Steve Turre, Buster Williams and others. He graduated to leading his own bands, but also attracted great interest for his work with Charlie Hunters Pound For Pound ensemble. Harris continues to tour extensively, including going on the 1999 Blue Note New Directions tour with Greg Osby, Mark Shim and Jason Moran.
In his playing of the vibraphone, Harris constantly displays his delight in melody, whether as soloist or as ensemble player. In his own bands, notably Blackout, he appears to prefer developing concepts through the band rather than as personal showcases and the...
