It is understandable to assume that the members of Starflyer 59 are from England, especially since their music is obviously modelled after the UK’s ‘shoegazer’ movement from the late 80s/early 90s. Originating from Aliso Viejo, California, USA, Starflyer 59 is the brainchild of songwriter Jason Martin (vocals/guitar), who writes and produces all of their recordings himself. Raised in an ultra strict Christian household, Martin was forbidden from listening to rock music early on. Just like any other teenager he would sneak off to friends’ homes to study their record collections, resulting in an admiration for alternative bands such as the Smiths, the Pixies, and New Order. One such friend who would turn Martin on to the latest cutting-edge sounds was bass player Jeff Cloud, as the duo formed a bond that would result in Martin forming Starflyer 59 during 1993 (Cloud would go on to join the band in the late 90s).
