Biography

Formed in 1975 by saxophonist Jay Beckenstein (14 May 1951, New York City, New York, USA) and pianist Jeremy Wall, the original Spyro Gyra comprised Chet Catallo (electric guitar), David Wolford (electric bass), Eli Konikoff (drums), and Gerardo Velez (percussion). After a modest start in Buffalo, New York, and an album on a small independent label, Beckenstein’s hard work and commitment through countless changes of personnel resulted in appearances at major international jazz festivals in the 80s, and several gold albums. In addition to having numerous hits in the USA, the band found considerable success in the UK with the infectious ‘Morning Dance’. The band’s mainstream treatment of a mixture of funk, Latin, and jazz remains popular today. They remain, however, an enigma; their following is considerable and stays stable after more than 20 years together.
