Biography
After originally forming as a loose jamming partnership, Spiritual Beggars evolved to become the latest in a long line of excellent Swedish rock bands. The band was formed in 1992 by Michael Amott (b 28 July 1970, England; guitar, ex-Carcass), Ludwig Witt (drums), and Spice (Christian Sjöstrand; bass/vocals), to explore new musical avenues for the previously death metal-inclined Amott (who also plays concurrently in Arch Enemy). After much rehearsing the bands retro sounding, groove-laden psychedelic rock first came to light on 1994s Spiritual Beggars. The press lumped them into the growing stoner rock movement, although Spiritual Beggars probably owed more to 70s bands such as Deep Purple and Mountain than contemporaries Kyuss.
