Biography
Formed in New York in 1982 by George Jinda (4 June 1940, Hungary, d. 11 January 2002; drums/percussion) and Chieli Minucci (b. 17 April 1958, Huntington, New York, USA; guitar), Special EFX blended African and Latin rhythms and produce a mixture of light rock and MOR jazz. Their music is perfect for the GRP Records label and consequently their output is prolific. They employ additional musicians to give them a rich and, in keeping with GRPs policy, state-of-the-art recording sound. Session players include Mark Egan, McCoy Tyner, Dave Grusin and Omar Hakim. All the albums up to Just Like Magic were basically the same sensitive mixture of accessible jazz/pop. The latter album is more acoustic, with Jindas electronic percussion replaced by wooden world music.
