
Biography
Formed in San Francisco, California in 1965, Sopwith Camel originally consisted of Peter Kraemer (guitar/vocals), Terry McNeil (guitar/keyboards), Rod Albin (bass) and Fritz Kasten (drums). This embryonic line-up faltered with the loss of its rhythm section, but the arrival of William Sievers (guitar), Martin Beard (bass) and former Mike Bloomfield drummer Norman Mayell heralded the beginning of the group's most successful era. Their debut single, "Hello Hello', reached the US Top 30 in January 1967, and its charming simplicity recalled the good-time music of the Lovin" Spoonful. The two groups shared the same label and Sopwith Camel were promoted as a surrogate, denying them the guitar-based direction their live show offered.
