Originating from New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, and deriving their name from the similarly titled Charlton Heston sci-fi movie, Soilent Green shares the intensity of local heavyweights Crowbar, and occasional members of neighbours Down and Eyehategod. Formed in 1988 by guitarists Donovan Punch and Brian Patton with drummer Tommy Buckley, the band underwent a series of line-up changes before the addition of bass player Scott Williams (James Scott Williams, USA, d. 26 April 2004, Gretna, Louisiana, USA) in 1992 and vocalist Ben Falgoust (b. Louis Benjamin Falgoust II, USA: ex-Paralysis) a year later. Shows around Louisiana and Texas followed and a series of well-received demos led to a contract with Dwell Records and the release of PussySoul. A demanding listen that veered wildly between hardcore, grindcore and sludge, the album nonetheless firmly established the band.
