Soesja Citroen

Decades: 1980s 1990s 2000s

Den Haag, the Netherlands. A highly gifted singer whose style and musical interests are firmly rooted in post-bop, Citroen’s work deserves much wider attention than has so far been the case. Her voice is rich and fluid and her phrasing clearly demonstrates an excellent ear for the intricate nuances of bop. Although customarily working with fellow countrymen, she has also recorded with Dusko Goykovich and John Clayton. She is a gifted lyricist and on a 1983 album of music by Thelonious Monk, she contributed lyrics to several modern jazz standards, including ‘Crepescule With Nellie’ (‘In Twilight’), ‘Monk’s Mood’ (‘Underneath This Cover’) and ‘Let’s Cool One’ (‘Come With Me’).
