Biography
This German black metal/thrash trio was formed in 1983 by Tom Angelripper (bass, vocals), Aggressor (vocals, guitar) and Chris Witchhunter (drums), drawing inspiration from bands such as Motörhead, Anvil and Venom. Aggressor was replaced by the similarly pseudonymous Grave Violator on the agenda-setting debut EP, In The Sign Of Evil. By the time Obsessed By Cruelty emerged in 1986, Grave Violator had been replaced by Destructor. The latter was in turn replaced by Frank Blackfire Gosdzik on 1987s Expurse Of Sodomy EP. Persecution Mania followed in the same year and marked a vast improvement over their debut, though lyrics had not moved on from obsessions with war, bloodlust and the black arts. Produced by Harris Johns, it had a crisp and powerful sound and was to become the bands bestselling release.
