Biography
This Canadian alternative rock band originated at the Nova Scotia College Of Art in Halifax, where Andrew Scott (15 November 1967, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; drums) and Chris Murphy (b. 7 November 1968, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada; bass) linked with Patrick Pentland (b. Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland; guitar) and Jay Ferguson (b. 14 October 1968, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; guitar/vocals). Sloan developed their own sound from a mixture of hardcore and grunge influences, producing a guitar-fuelled battery of short, sharp songs, releasing 1992s Peppermint EP, recorded at a friends house in Halifax, through their own Murderecords label. A lively performance at Canadas East Coast Music Conference brought the band to the attention of Geffen Records, who liked the EP and promptly signed Sloan.
