Biography
Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. Singer-songwriter Shirley Eikhard was befriended as a child by Anne Murray and Sylvia Tyson, and studied with Cleo Laine. Father Cec played bass and her mother June the fiddle in the family group, the Tantramar Ramblers. She was given her first guitar at the age of 11, writing her first songs in the basement of the family home in Oshawa, Ontario. Through her parents she discovered country music and the Canadian folk of Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot. Her first major concert appearance came at a fiddling festival in Colbourg, Ontario, at the age of 12. Afterwards she wrote a reply to an advertisement requesting new songwriters to audition for the Mariposal Folk Festival. She won, playing alongside Mitchell, Ian And Sylvia and Bruce Cockburn.
