This UK indie rock band is most notable for featuring ex-Verve members Simon Jones (29 July 1972, Liverpool, Lancashire, England; bass) and Simon Tong (b. 1972, Lancashire, England; guitar/keyboards). The band evolved from a project set up by ex-Stone Roses / Seahorses member John Squire, with Jones recruited by the mercurial guitarist alongside unknown musicians including vocalist Duncan Baxter and drummer Mark Heaney. Though this project ultimately fell apart, Jones, Baxter and Heaney carried on working together when Squire finally pulled the plug. They were joined by Jones’ ex-bandmate Tong, who had joined the Verve on their final album, Urban Hymns, and lead guitarist Dan Macbean. Naming their new band the Shining (after the Stephen King novel), the quintet locked themselves away in a small rehearsal space in London for several months in order to perfect their sound.
