Biography

A new age duo of Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry (County Kildare, Eire) and Norwegian composer/keyboard player Rolf Lovland (b. Kristiansand, Norway), Secret Garden shot to fame in 1995 when their song, ‘Nocturne’, won the Eurovision Song Contest. Many cynics, noted, however, that it was not the strength of the song that carried it through, but its inherent similarity to the previous year’s neo-Celtic winner. Prior to forming the duo, Sherry had accompanied artists including Sinéad O’Connor and Van Morrison, both live and in the studio. Lovland was already an established songwriter and composer when the two met during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. Their debut album Songs From A Secret Garden, originally released in Norway just prior to their Eurovision success, was eventually given much more widespread international coverage, including an American campaign to target it at vegetarian restaurants and New Age book shops.
