Biography
Joan Elizabeth Shaw, 29 January 1944, Newport News, Virginia, USA. Jones first stage name was Joan Temple. After starting to sing in her home town she tried her luck in New York. Like so many other singers of note, Jones won a talent contest at Harlems Apollo theatre, singing September Song, and was soon appearing professionally at the Village Vanguard. In the mid-60s she left the USA for Europe, singing in Paris and London, where she appeared at Ronnie Scotts club attracting considerable praise. She appeared on television and had success with A Walk In The Black Forest. In 1978 she made her first visit to Japan, which proved to be her destiny for almost two decades. Hugely popular in the Far East, she made numerous albums, including 20 for JVC alone.
