Biography
Although the members of the Collective come from different places, they assemble each spring in San Francisco, California for a short residency before embarking on tour. In 2002, tenor and soprano saxophonist Joshua Redman was appointed Spring Season Artistic Director of the non-profit SFJAZZ organization. Redman formed the SFJAZZ Collective, an eight-piece group. On their 2004 debut album with Redman were Nicholas Payton (trumpet), Joshua Roseman (trombone), Miguel Zenón (alto saxophone), Renée Rosnes (piano), Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone), Robert Hurst (bass), and Brian Blade (drums). Later editions of the octet have included trombonists Isaac Smith and Andre Hayward, bass player Matt Penman and drummer Eric Harland. Also involved with the eight instrumentalists is arranger Gil Goldstein.
