Biography

Rupaul Andre Charles, 17 November 1960, Dan Diego, California, USA. A seven-foot tall (in heels), transsexual American diva package. At the age of 15 RuPaul took himself (as he then was) off to Atlanta, where he associated with the B-52’s and appeared on cable television. Moving to New York, he would become part of the Wigstock counter-culture that also gave birth to Deee-Lite. He subsequently became a figurehead for the US gay movement when his debut album crossed over to the mainstream, and was a chat show favourite. He has been keen to tackle the role, leading a demonstration against the Ku Klux Klan in full drag. He obtained his own television series, and helped to present the 1994 BRIT Awards alongside a dwarfed Elton John.
