
Biography
1 September 1941, Three Rivers, Texas, USA. This respected performer first formed his group, the Traits, in 1958, after moving to San Marcos. The line-up included Jerry Gibson (drums), who later played with Sly And The Family Stone. Head recorded for several local labels, often under the supervision of famed Texas producer Huey P. Meaux, but it was not until 1965 that he had a national hit when Treat Her Right reached number 2 on both the US pop and R&B charts. This irresistible song, with its pumping horns and punchy rhythm, established the singer alongside the Righteous Brothers as that years prime blue-eyed soul exponent. Heads later releases appeared on a variety of outlets, including Dunhill Records and Elektra Records, and embraced traces of rockabilly (Apple Of My Eye) and psychedelia (Youre (Almost) Tuff).
