As you might expect from their very black metal-sounding name, Greece’s Rotting Christ play what they call ‘dark metal’, which translates broadly as extreme metal with plenty of gloomy gothic-isms and ambient sounds. The results are satisfyingly spooky but there is plenty of power in the brew, too: after all, the band was formed in reaction to the growing black metal movement in Scandinavia. Formed in Athens in the mid-80s by Necromayhem (Sakis Athanasois Tolis, 29 June 1972, Athens, Greece; vocals/guitar), Necrosavron (b. Themis Efthimios Tolis, 28 March 1974, Athens, Greece; drums) and Mutilator (b. Jim Patsouris, 24 July 1971, Athens, Greece; bass), Rotting Christ’s Venom and Slayer influences were apparent on the Passage To Arcturo EP. Adding keyboard player Magus Wampyr Daoloth (b.
