22 August 1931, Lynchburg, Tennessee, USA, d. 27 July 2002, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Based in Nashville, Shelton, with his high tenor voice, made his mark in the mid-60s with a style that reflected both gospel and country music influences and modestly rode on the back of the popularity for southern-style deep soul. Shelton served a long apprenticeship singing for the Fireside Gospel Singers and, more importantly, for the famed Fairfield Four, before recording blues for Excello Records in the 50s. For John Richbourg’s Sound Stage 7 operation, he released two deep-soul ballads, ‘Strain On My Heart’ (number 25 R&B, 1965) and ‘Easy Going Fellow’ (number 32 R&B, 1965), both written by New Orleans’ Allen Orange. An appealing album followed, Soul In His Music, Music In His Soul, which featured more fine compositions by Orange.
