1952, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Raised in the heady musical atmosphere of the city of her birth, Passos studied piano from the age of three, then guitar and began singing eight years later. She started composing songs while still in her teens and over the years continued to do so, often in collaboration with lyricist Fernando de Oliveira. Indeed, Passos 1978 debut Recriação, consisted entirely of their songs. From the late 60s, she appeared on television and at national music festivals. At the end of the 70s she made her first album but then absented herself from the scene for a few years to begin married life and start raising a family.
Since her return in the mid-80s, Passos has steadily built her reputation, especially in her homeland. Among the artists whose work she has taken to her heart are Ary Barroso, Dori Caymmi, João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Stylish and eloquent in her interpretation of these...
