Raised in Chicago, Mazurek began playing cornet at the age of 10, then in his mid-teens switched to trumpet until he was in his early thirties when he returned to the cornet. At 17, he studied jazz and classical music privately, paying particular attention to the music of the AEC, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Bela Bartók and Igor Stravinsky. As co-founder with Jeff Parker and Chad Taylor of the Chicago Underground Orchestra, and its various small groups, and also of Isotope 217 and Exploding Star Orchestra, Mazurek became a significant artist in the Chicago-based avant garde of jazz and rock and funk, and various combinations of the three forms.
