Biography
Ignored during their brief recording career in the mid-80s, this US hardcore band has since been credited as a major influence by a large number of modern punk and emo bands. Formed in Washington, DC, in spring 1984, the line-up featured Guy Picciotto (17 October 1965, Washington, DC, USA; vocals/guitar), Eddie Janney (guitar, ex-Untouchables), Michael Fellows (bass) and Brendan Canty (drums, ex-Deadline). Rites Of Spring emerged alongside other Washington-based post-hardcore bands such as Embrace as part of the so-called Revolution Summer scene, which attempted to bring a new-found emotional honesty to hardcore music. The change of lyrical emphasis did not mean an attendant mellowing in other areas, and it was as a frighteningly intense live band that Rites Of Spring made their name.
