Biography
Rita Lee Jones, 31 December 1947, São Paulo, Brazil. Over the years, Rita Lee has maintained her rock image, being marketed and popularly known as Brazils Queen of Rock. Among artists with whom she has worked and whose music she has sung are Caetano Veloso, João Gilberto, Elis Regina and Paulo Coleho. Lees father was American, her mother Italian. Although interested in music from early childhood, she was not formally trained. In her teens, she and friends formed a six-piece band, OSeis. In the mid-60s, and now reduced to three, the group mutated into the rock band Os Mutantes, comprising herself, Sérgio Baptista and Arnaldo Dias Baptista; she married the latter in 1971. The group, which was encouraged by Gilberto Gil, broke new musical ground, not always pleasing the more traditional members of her Brazilian audiences.
