Formed at art school in Oxfordshire, England, in 1988 by Mark Gardener (vocals/guitar), Andy Bell (11 August 1970, Cardiff, Wales; guitar/vocals), Stephan Queralt (bass) and Laurence Colbert (drums), Ride had a rapid impact on the alternative music scene. Initially described as the House Of Love with chainsaws, within a year the quartets serrated guitar melodies were attracting unusual amounts of attention. At the start of 1990 their debut EP for Creation Records reached number 71 in the UK charts. By the end of the spring, Ride had transcended their independent parameters and entered the Top 40 of the UK chart with the Play EP, helped by their youthful good looks and large-scale touring (the two EPs were repackaged as Smile for the US market).
