Biography
Richard Dean Margitza, 24 October 1961, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Margitzas family background, which has gypsy roots, was decidedly musical. A grandfather was a session musician, playing bass and cello with artists as diverse as Glenn Miller and Charlie Bird Parker, while his father played violin with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Margitza himself began playing violin at a very early age, added piano and oboe before taking up the tenor saxophone while in high school. Redirected through this instrumental shift, Margitzas formal studies continued and additionally, in the late 70s, he took tuition from musicians including Sonny Stitt, Michael Brecker. In the early 80s, he attended the Berklee College Of Music and received private tuition from Dave Liebman.
