Biography
Richard Cole, 29 February 1948, Trenton, New Jersey, USA. Cole took up the guitar as a small child, having heard jazz at two clubs, the Harlem and Hubby’s Inn, owned by his father. Before reaching his teens he had switched to alto saxophone on which instrument he studied with Phil Woods. Later, he attended Berklee College Of Music and then, in 1969, he joined Buddy Rich. In the early 70s he played in several bands, including Lionel Hampton’s, led his own small bands and worked with Eddie Jefferson. On and off, Cole was with Jefferson from 1973 until the singer’s murder in 1979. Next to Woods, Jefferson was the major influence on Cole’s musical life and in a 1987 interview he indicated that he was writing a symphony dedicated to Jefferson.
