Biography
2 July 1928, Oakland, California, USA. In mid-teenage, he was playing piano in San Francisco jazz clubs, accompanying local musicians and visitors. In the late 50s he moved to New York where he worked with many jazz artists in both bop and mainstream. By the mid-60s he had settled into a long spell with Kenny Burrell with whom he toured extensively. In 1974 he left Burrell to join JPJ Trio, replacing co-founder Dill Jones. In the late 70s and through the 80s, he continued to play a discreet supporting role with a wide range of jazzmen. Despite such diffidence, however, Wyands is an accomplished and inventive soloist with a light touch and a subtly understated but engaging sense of swing as can be heard on Then, Here And Now, and the more recent Half And Half, rare instances of Wyands as leader.
