Biography

Shareese Renèe Ballard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The early twenty-first century saw several female pop/R&B singers emerge in the USA, such as Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, and Res, as record companies attempted to discover the next Lauryn Hill or Macy Gray. Res grew up with a love of classic soul via her parents’ record collection, but also gained an appreciation of more modern rock sounds while attending the all-girls Catholic college prep school, the Academy of Notre Dame. Res began taking singing lessons early on, and during her teenage years was singing Italian arias from operas. It was during her sophomore year at Temple University that an old friend of Res’ family (who was also an A&R assistant at Epic Records) heard her sing, and soon after, flew the young singer out to New York.
