Biography
James W. Holloway, 31 May 1927, Helena, Arkansas, USA. Holloway grew up in a musical family - his father and mother were both musicians - and he initially played piano. He grew up in Chicago where he attended DuSable High School and the Conservatory of Music. While still at school, where his classmates included Von Freeman and Johnny Griffin, he took up the baritone saxophone, later switching to tenor. He played in and around Chicago, working with Gene Wright’s big band for three years before entering the US Army. After his discharge he returned to Chicago, where he became deeply involved in the local jazz scene, playing with such artists as Yusef Lateef and Dexter Gordon. In 1948 he joined Roosevelt Sykes for a US tour. He remained based in Chicago throughout the 50s and early 60s, playing with many leading blues artists.
