Biography
28 April 1928, Paris, France, d. 1 May 1979, Paris, France. In the years immediately following World War II, Fol played piano in traditional jazz bands and in bebop groups. He worked with several noted European musicians, including Boris Vian, Django Reinhardt, and his alto saxophonist older brother, Hubert Fol. In the early 50s he regularly accompanied visiting Americans and also recorded with some of them, including Roy Eldridge, Johnny Hodges, Dizzy Gillespie. Also during the 50s Fol worked in Claude Luters band which toured with Sidney Bechet, with Guy Lafitte and Stéphane Grappelli. In the 60s he was also associated with Duke Ellingtons orchestra and with various Ellingtonians including Paul Gonsalves. A deft and imaginative soloist, Fol brought to his work a considerable measure of technical virtuosity which was always at the service of the music he played.
