Biography

1974, New Hampshire, USA. It is astonishing that Ray LaMontagne ever became a musician at all. He spent his early adult life avoiding any associations with his father, a Nashville musician who deserted his family when LaMontagne was aged four. It was a tough life as his mother and her children moved frequently, sometimes sleeping out in cars or tents. Growing up, he kept himself distracted with drugs, and finally drifted into a job in a shoe factory in Maine. It was as he was waking up for work to the sound of his clock radio that LaMontagne discovered his true calling. Hearing Stephen Stills’ ‘Tree Top Flyer’ inspired him to change his musical life. At 21 years old, LaMontagne committed himself to writing and performing songs, although playing in front of an audience was initially almost insuperably daunting for a man who was so shy he barely ever spoke.
