New Jersey, USA. This R&B vocalist is the son of noted jazz cellist Abdul Wadud, and naturally his early years were spent in a musical environment. Raised in Maryland, DeVaughn began singing in a vocal group at college and before long was devoting all his energies to making music his career. He formed the Urban Ave 31 project with vocalist Tennyson Richards and producer Omar Retnu. Beginning with 2002s The Healing: Daily Dosage, they released a number of independent albums through Universal People Improvement and their own Urban Ave Music imprint. The trio, often augmented by additional members, enjoyed notable success on the underground circuit with their blend of socially aware lyrics, DeVaughns smooth soul vocals, and Retnus cutting edge production style.
