Greg Strzempka (vocals, guitar) and Elyse Steinman (bottleneck guitar) formed Raging Slab in 1983, with the ever-changing supporting personnel including future Warrior Soul singer Kory Clarke on drums. Bass player Alec Morton joined the line-up on 1986’s debut Assmaster, which was elaborately packaged with a comic drawn by friends at Marvel Comics. It was followed by True Death as the band supported themselves with constant touring. Additional guitarist Mark Middleton was enlisted before a major contract emerged. The three-guitar frontline gave a definite southern rock flavour to the band’s basic rock ‘n’ roll, but gigging around the New York hardcore scene of the 80s also added a hard, contemporary edge. Raging Slab, with latest drummer Bob Pantella, was excellent, with ‘Geronimo’, a sensitive lament to the fall of the Native American nation, serving as the album’s centrepiece.
