This highly rated Australian band was formed in Sydney, New South Wales, in 1974. Its Detroit/ MC5 guitar-based sound was propelled by two American medical students, Deniz Tek (Detroit, Michigan, USA; guitar) and Phillip Pip Hoyle (guitar/keyboards), plus Rob Younger (vocals), Warwick Gilbert (guitar), Ron Keeley (drums), Carl Rourke (bass) and, joining later, Chris Masuak (guitar). Because of study commitments the band was very much a part-time affair. This heightened the mystique that surrounded the band as they forged their own niche on the outer fringe of the Sydney music circuit from the mid-70s. A trip to the UK in 1978 saw a short tour and an album, but the band dissolved shortly afterwards.
Radio Birdman went on to inspire many new bands, to the extent that Sydney became widely regarded as the nurturing ground for Australian guitar-based outfits. Lead singer Rob Younger became one of the most important producers of...
