Biography
From Oldham, Lancashire, England, Puressence made their debut in May 1992 with the Petrol Skin EP for Northern 2 Damn Loud Records. Led by the affecting tenor of Jamie Mudriczki, it earned the band, comprising Neil McDonald (guitar), Kevin Matthews (bass) and Tony Szuminski (drums), significant early exposure. It coincided with an outing on the Rough Trade Records Singles CluAt this stage there was still a lack of focus and musical integrity within their guitar rock platform, but Toby Chalmers of Island Records evidently saw enough potential to offer them a recording contract. Support slots to local favourites Marion introduced them to new supporters, before their first Island single, I Suppose, was released in May 1995. Afterwards the band moved on to sessions for their debut album with Clive Martin. The result was Puressence, with Mudriczkis vocals particularly effective on tracks such as Casting Lazy Shadows.
