Biography
Having been seriously considered by Judas Priest as a replacement for the departed Rob Halford it came as no surprise that former Tyran Pace and Gamma Ray vocalist Ralf Scheepers next project should bear the influence of his favourite band. Formed in Esslingen, Germany, Primal Fears original line-up comprised fellow Judas Priest enthusiasts and old friends, bass player Mat Sinner and guitarist Tom Naumann (both ex-Sinner), and drummer Klaus Sperling (Sinner, Insanity). Immediately musically compatible, the bands first demo secured a recording contract with Nuclear Blast Records and their self-titled debut appeared in 1998. Primal Fear was an unrestrained power metal romp. Intricate dual lead work, churning riffs and Scheepers histrionic vocals obviously alluded to Judas Priest but the forceful style also bore comparisons to Iced Earth, Hammerfall and Iron Maiden.
