Biography
Canadian roots outfit formed by accomplished singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Trish Klein (Canada; guitar/banjo/vocals) and Allison Russell (b. Montreal, Quebec, Canada; vocals/clarinet). The duo initially got together in 2000 for a series of impromptu jam sessions at Kleins house, but by this point Klein was already heavily involved in recording sessions with newgrass unit the Be Good Tanyas. Russell in turn was still working with the Vancouver-based traditional band Fear Of Drinking. She reunited with Klein in 2003 while the latter was still working on the Be Good Tanyas second album, with the duo officially adopting the moniker Po Girl. Their self-titled debut album emerged the same summer on the HighTone Records label. The duos soulful fusion of blues, country and jazz sounded both timeless and timely, with Kleins rootsy backing vocals proving the perfect complement to Russells jazzy lead.
