Biography
Pizzicato Five are a union of fashion models and satirists from Japan, started in 1984 by Keitaro Takanami and Yasuharu Konishi (3 February 1959, Japan), two college students obsessed with the Monkees. Konishi was born on the day Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in an air crash, and this fact led to an enduring interest in all aspects of rock n roll. Fellow members included Ryo Kamomiya and singer Mamiko Sasaki. Their first single, 1985s Audrey Hepburn Complex, demonstrated their fascination with retro-chic. As had been the case with another Japanese band to earn notoriety in the West, Shonen Knife, Pizzicato Five released a number of domestic albums (some 17 before 1995) and singles before making inroads in the USA and UK markets.
