Biography
Formed in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1985, Phuture made an enormous impact on dance music on the strength of a very small number of releases. Comprising DJ Pierre (Pierre Feroldi, USA), Spanky and Herb J, they are best known for their classic ‘Acid Trax’, the much-imitated defining single of the acid house genre. The trio initially formed to record tracks for Pierre to use in his DJ sets on the Chicago house scene. Using a studio device called the Roland TB-303 (that is now cited as a definitive dance music tool), intended for use by guitarists, they put together a track featuring ‘acidic’ electronic squelches called ‘In Your Mind’. The Chicago DJ Ron Hardy played this recording during one of his sets at the Music Box. The trio then re-recorded the track with Marshall Jefferson on production duties.
