Biography

Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. A practising and committed religious performer who is famed for refusing to play on the Jewish Sabbath, Himmelman has slowly built a loyal following for his sombre, workmanlike output over the course of several albums. At his best, however, some critics have offered comparisons with Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson.

Himmelman got his start in music as the leader of Minnesota’s Sussman Lawrence, an alternative rock band made up of hometown school friends who released two albums in the early 80s. He soon went solo, however, producing a raft of albums that failed to ignite the mainstream but were always purchased in sufficient quantities by his loyal fans. By the late 90s Himmelman was heavily involved in soundtrack work, working on Crossing The Bridge, Dinner & Driving, The Souler Opposite, Liar’s Poker and television shows Bug Juice and Judging Amy.
