Biography
5 June 1954, Somers Point, New Jersey, USA. Erskine began playing drums while still a toddler, and at the age of six was attending the Stan Kenton Stage Band Camps. He studied advanced drum techniques under Alan Dawson and then, at the age of 18, joined Kenton. He played with Kenton for three years, touring internationally and establishing a formidable reputation as a player and teacher. In 1976 he joined Maynard Ferguson, then in a jazz rock phase, and two years later became a member of Weather Report where he remained into the early 80s. After leaving Weather Report, Erskine worked in the studios and also made records and toured with Michael Brecker and David Sancious in the band known as Steps Ahead and with John Abercrombie. From the late 80s onwards he was active as leader of his own group, a band that included Brecker and Abercrombie, playing in the tradition in which Erskine is an established master.
