Biography
Peter Michael Yellin, 18 July 1939, New York City, New York, USA. Yellins father was a studio pianist with NBC and there was always music to be heard at home. It was not until the late 50s, however, that Yellin considered music as a career. While at Denver University on a basketball scholarship, he heard Art Pepper. After borrowing an alto saxophone from the music department, he decided that this was where his future lay. Returning to New York, and encouraged and guided by his father, he began studying, both privately, under Augustine Duques, and at the Juilliard School of Music with Joseph Allard. Determined to succeed in his planned career, after graduating from Juilliard he also studied flute, clarinet and music theory. He found work in dance and Latin bands, in pit orchestras for Broadway shows, as well as playing in studios.
