1968, José Aguilar, San Antonio, Texas, USA. Aguilar is the son of Flor Silvestre and Antonio Aguilar, both noted singers and actors, and was born in the USA where his father was touring. Raised partly in Zacatecas, Mexico, from the start music was his life. He appeared on stage with his parents from the age of three and through this made his New York debut at five at no less a venue than Madison Square Garden. His first interest, however, lay in composing and he wrote songs for various artists, but also played drums and sang in rock bands, leading his own group for a while. This was in the mid- to late 80s but early in the 90s he made an important move away from rock, embracing instead ranchero and mariachi.
