Biography

Formed in St. Louis, Missouri, USA in the early 70s, this progressive rock band was initially called High On A Small Hill and then Pavlov’s Dog And The Condition Reflex Soul Revue And Concert Choir. The original line-up featured David Surkamp (vocals/guitar), Rick Stockton (bass), Mike Safron (drums), Siegfried Carver (Richard Nadlar; violin/viola), Steve Scorfina (guitar, ex-REO Speedwagon), Doug Rayburn (mellotron/flute), and David Hamilton (keyboards). The band was initially signed to the ABC-Dunhill Records label for a record $650, 000, for whom they recorded 1975’s Pampered Menial under the aegis of Blue Öyster Cult producers Sandy Pearlman and Murray Krugman. The septet almost immediately relocated to Columbia Records, either in a label exchange with the country rock unit Poco or for another large advance, with both stories claimed by members of the band.
