Matthias Paul, 16 December 1971, Eisenhüttenstadt, Brandenburg, East Germany. Van Dyk rose to prominence as one of Europes most popular DJs, artists and remixers in only a few years. As a teenager in East Berlin, he listened to the rather sombre UK indie sounds of the Smiths, Depeche Mode and New Order but he was taken with the thriving club scene in Berlin and began DJing in 1988. He secured his first gig at Turbine and made such an impression on his debut that he soon became a popular DJ on the booming Berlin dance music scene. He went on to become the long-standing resident at Dubmission at the E-Werk club in Berlin. Van Dyk released his first 12-inch single, Perfect Day, under the name Visions Of Shiva in 1992 on the German label MFS. He also released the full-length albums 45 RPM (1994) and Seven Ways (1996) on MPS, which were later licensed to Deviant Records (in the UK) and Mute Records (in the USA).
