Biography

24 March 1947, Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA. The distinctive, curling sound of Paul McCandless on English horn, oboe, saxophones, flute, clarinet, musette (a French bagpipe from the nineteenth century) and wind-driven synthesizers has done much to define the fusion music of Oregon. The nucleus of the group, Ralph Towner, Collin Walcott, and McCandless, came together as members of the influential Paul Winter Consort. Just as the part-time nature of Oregon has enabled its members to undertake other projects, so, too, has McCandless taken that opportunity to work with Art Lande and David Samuels; he also reunited with ex-Consort cellist Dave Darling in the Gallery project, and played with Eberhard Weber.
