6 September 1954, Los Angeles, California, USA. Born into a family active in many areas of the arts, from an early age O’Hearn was encouraged to take part in any music making that happened around him, trying out on various instruments. His mother was a classically trained pianist who also led a small jazz group in which her son was invited to play the bass. He was soon being offered gigs with other bands and had decided upon a musical career while still in his early teens. By the start of the 80s O’Hearn had shifted into contemporary pop and rock and became bass player with Frank Zappa’s group, where he spent more than two years, and was also a member of Missing Persons. O’Hearn became an in-demand session musician and among the jazz and pop musicians with whom he appeared on record were Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Charles Lloyd, Carlos Santana, Ravi Shankar and Rod Stewart.
