Pat LaBarbera

Decades: 1990s 2000s

Pascel LaBarbera, 7 April 1944, Warsaw, New York, USA. Older brother of John and Joe LaBarbera, he, too, was first taught by his father. He later studied at Berklee College Of Music from where he went into Buddy Rich’s band as featured tenor saxophone soloist. In the mid-70s he moved to Canada and then joined Elvin Jones. A powerful player with a style rooted in post- John Coltrane tenor thinking, his talent is such that he has not fallen into the self-induced trap which befell so many others. His energy and improvisational skills are linked to an engaging romantic flavour which he displays on several other instruments in the saxophone family and also the flute.
